MISSION
STEP’s Mission is to provide free recovery services on demand for anyone with an alcohol or drug-related problem.

PHILOSOPHY
STEP’s service philosophy is values-based following twelve-step recovery principles. This philosophy states that::

Courtesy, kindness, justice and love are the keynotes for harmony with all people. We can ask ourselves, “Am I doing to others as I would have them do to me—today?” In all situations we need self-restraint, an honest analysis of what is involved, a willingness to admit when the fault is ours and an equal willingness to forgive when the fault is elsewhere.
--Adapted from the 12 & 12 and the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous

HISTORY
STEP’s services began in 1972 and have grown and evolved from a one person counseling program serving first and second generation Italian Americans into the first of its kind recovery serving 1,600 people a year, with satellite sites in Dudley Square, Roxbury and a prison treatment unit in Billerica serving 500 inmates a year.
